Pondworks

Pondworks aims to make Clapton Pond a better place to live and work by involving local people in the active protection and improvement of this historic open space. Funded by Clapton NRF Community Chest and Hackney Community Chest grants.

Clapton Pond is a designated conservation area which lies at the centre of what was once the historic village of Clapton. This area has become a major transport route and is now sadly dominated by traffic, litter and anti-social behaviour. Because of this, and the lack of maintenance, Clapton Pond had become unsafe for community use and undervalued as a community resource.

The project aims to develop an inclusive neighbourhood action group that helps to maintain and improve this open space. By working with local residents, schools and community groups in the Clapton NRF area this project will extend our present activities by involving under represented groups and developing a community safety initiative. Phase 1 of the project will develop a range of outreach activities to develop community pride and a sense of ownership of this heritage asset. Environmental initiatives will include a gardening club, regular community Pond spring cleans, the implementation of a recycling scheme and the monitoring of rubbish hotspots. The project will also train local people in planning issues and the administrative processes of local government, develop an education pack for local schools about the history and ecology of Clapton Pond and provide community consultation for the development of a Restoration Management Plan and a funding application to Heritage Lottery Funds Public Parks Initiative.

Phase 2 will include the implementation of physical improvements to the highways, streetscape and design of the pond in partnership with Groundwork Hackney, English Heritage and Hackney Council.
