Redevelopment of Clapton Pond
The project to redevelop the Clapton Pond Area, which includes the two enclosed green spaces on the east side of Lower Clapton Road, is now entering the final stage of planning.
After several meetings and much discussion, Land Use Consultants have prepared a draft of the proposed redevelopment plan, which the management committee have initially all agreed to. The cost of the plan is far in excess of current available funds, but its purpose is to represent a longer-term plan for the area, with a view to being the ‘guide’ for the extended redevelopment process. Current funds available for the project are in the region of £30K, and will go some way to completing the ‘1st phase’ of the project. It has not been decided what the various phases of the project may entail yet - that is still open to discussion. The next step is to gauge public reaction about the draft and then discuss the options.
The plan is based around the principle of ‘restoring some of the historical features’ of the area, whilst making these changes in keeping with current tastes and usage trends. It is also concerned with developing the area into a public space that is both well designed and well lit, so as to try and make it more accessible to local people. It is far from an easy task to balance all the various aspects of the project to produce a result that suits the needs of all the diverse members of the local community, which is why it is important that we hear your opinions.
The main points that the plan addresses are;
The general design and layout of both areas. Lighting - both ambient (safety) and aesthetic Seating – design and placement of new seating fixtures. Design of the enclosure (fence) – with a view to re-painting the existing fence. Landscaping - including tree planting, shrubbery removal and replanting, redesign of grassed areas, and installation of aquatic plants. Accessibility to water (decking), Fixing/replacement of fountain, Installation of bird-table(s).
With regard the longer term plan for the pond itself – the hope is to try and create a bio-diverse ecosystem which will eventually become stable and need minimal maintenance. Land Use seem to be well versed in this area, and the choice of aquatic plants will hopefully return the pond to a place where wildlife will flourish.
This primary purpose of the project is to, hopefully, return Clapton Pond to its historical position as an attractive local landmark and bring it back from a drab, poorly kept and underused piece of land, to a diverse, interesting and valuable asset to the area, and hopefully a social focal point for local people.
Please come along to the event on November 22nd to see the plans, join in the winter festivities and, most importantly, give us your feedback on the redevelopment plan.
