This page is all about the issues relating to traffic problems in the area. The points raised by members at recent meetings include:
Lea Bridge Road bus lane New bus lane on Lea Bridge Road – causing tailback traffic to Clapton Roundabout, which in rush hour, causes subsequent congestion right across the area. This issue was raised at the July meeting with TfL who have stated they are 'currently looking into the matter'.
Traffic Calming Traffic ‘calming’ measures put in place some time ago to divert traffic away from smaller roads around Millfields and the east side of Lower Clapton Road are considered by some to be unnecessary, and are causing undue congestion on Lower Clapton Road.

'Unofficial' Disabled Parking spaces It has been noted that ‘fake’ disabled spaces have appeared on some roads, including Thistlewaite Road and Newick Road. The group is considering taking action to persuade the council to remove all unofficial disabled parking spaces.
Controlled Parking Zones (Residents Parking) The council has proposed a new scheme to introduce controlled residents parking in the Clapton area. Views on this subject are mixed, with some people in favour and some against.
Many feel the idea will benefit residents allowing them to park in their own street by reducing the amount of non-residents parking in those streets.
Some concerns have however been raised:
-
The cost may become too high for some residents to afford. Once the scheme is in place residents will have little control on price increases for permits.
-
Visitor permits can sometimes be very restricted by the authorities.
-
The number of spaces available is not directly related to the number of residents who apply and obtain resident permits, so it is not guaranteed that an improvement will be seen. People who live on the Lea Bridge Road, who currently are forced to park in those roads, will also be eligible for permits so the volume of cars may not be significantly reduced by such a scheme.

A petition in favour of controlled parking was circulated at the July CPNAG meeting, and was signed by many residents. It will soon be sent to the council.
If you have strong views on this subject please visit the surveys section of this site and vote in the parking survey. To launch the survey in a new window click here.
